Importance of Heartworm Prevention

What Is Heartworm Disease? It is caused by Dirofilaria Immitis which is spread by mosquito bites. The worms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing severe damage, heart failure, and death. Heartworm disease affects both dogs and cats, though dogs are more common hosts.
Why It’s Serious Heartworm disease can host dozens of adult worms (up to 12 inches long) that can lead to heart failure, lung disease, and death if untreated. The treatment is costly, toxic, and risky.
Prevention Preventive measures include monthly chewables (e.g., Heartgard, Nexgard Plus) taken year-round, even in cold months. Annual testing is necessary, even if the animal is on prevention medication.
